peripheral processor
peripheral processor The name used in CDC systems for a special-purpose processor used to control peripheral units. (These processors go by a variety of names: on IBM systems they are referred to as channels, and have a much more restricted order code than a CDC peripheral processor.) In all cases the essence of the peripheral processor is that its order code is specifically tailored to the requirements of transferring information between main memory and the peripheral device or devices controlled by the peripheral processor.
