patchboard (plugboard) A matrix of sockets that can be interconnected manually by means of patchcords, i.e. cables with plugs attached to each end. Thus one socket can be patched to another. Patchcords were used in some early computers and punched-card machines to make temporary connections between devices, to program analog computers, and to connect different peripheral devices to computer lines.
