Sidelights
As a children's book illustrator, Kevan J. Atteberry is known for creating stylistic art using both computer programs and more-traditional means. In his illustrations for Frankie Stein by Lola M. Schaefer, Atteberry brings to life the story of a married Frankenstein-like couple whose child is cute and cuddly. The perplexed couple attempts to make their adorable little boy scarier by dying his hair purple and plastering fake warts on his face. According to Booklist contributor Ilene Cooper, Atteberry's "glossy graphic-style artwork," generated by computer, enhances Schaefer's story and "takes every opportunity to find the sly aside" featured in the author's text. Donna Atmur, reviewing the book in School Library Journal, remarked on Atteberry's bold use of color in Frankie Stein, concluding that the illustrator's use of purple and green highlights "the cartoony creepiness of the Stein house."
