sulphonylurea (sul-fŏ-nil-yoor-iă) n. one of a group of oral hypoglycaemic drugs, derived from a sulphonamide, that stimulate the beta cells in the islets of Langerhans to produce insulin and are used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. They include chlorpropamide, glibenclamide, and tolbutamide.
