neuromyelitis optica (Devic's disease) (newr-oh-my-ĕ-ly-tis op-tik-ă) n. a condition that is closely related to multiple sclerosis. Typically there is a transverse myelitis, producing paralysis and numbness of the limbs and trunk below the inflamed spinal cord, and retrobulbar (optic) neuritis affecting both optic nerves.
