WHITEHEAD, James (T.) 1936-2003

OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born March 15, 1936, in St. Louis, MO; died of a ruptured aortic aneurysm August 15, 2003, in Fayetteville, AK. Educator and author. Whitehead was a poet and novelist who was also recognized for helping to establish the master of fine arts program at the University of Arkansas. He attended Vanderbilt University on a football scholarship, but his hopes of becoming a professional athlete were dashed by an injury. Completing his master's degree at Vanderbilt in 1960, he taught at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi for three years and then completed his M.F.A. at the renowned University of Iowa program. After finishing his second degree, he was hired at the University of Arkansas, where he and friend and fellow writer William Harrison established a nationally respected writing program. He retired from teaching in 1999. Whitehead was the author of the poetry collections Domains (1966), Local Men (1979), Actual Size (1985), and Near at Hand (1993), as well as one novel, Joiner (1971).
