SIDELIGHTS:

Paula S. Wallace is president of the Savannah College of Art and Design, one of the nation's largest art and design colleges. Wallace helped to found the institution and served as an academic dean and provost prior to assuming the presidency in 2000. Additionally, Wallace has helped to extend the scope of artistic endeavors in Savannah, Georgia, by organizing art fairs, film festivals, and exhibits on the college's campus. Despite this daunting schedule, she also writes books for children, most notably the "World" series.

Each of Wallace's "World" series books uses the same ten countries: Australia, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and the United States. She then examines each country on the topic at hand, from birthdays and food, through holidays and sports. The books all include craft and recipe ideas pertaining to each of the countries, and the sports book describes different games played in each nation. In a School Library Journal review of The World of Birthdays, Maryann H. Owen noted that the material Wallace makes available is "beautifully presented, concise, and useful." Also in School Library Journal, Andrew Medlar concluded that The World of Sports is that rare title indeed, "useful for art and gym teachers."
