SIDELIGHTS:
Thomas Adams Upchurch told CA: "I am an old-school historian. I like politics and race relations, and particularly the convergence of the two. Most of my research is in that field, but I also have a topical interest in religious history, which I am cultivating lately. I have a chronological specialty in the Gilded Age, although I am currently writing a book about the founding generation of the United States and another book about the civil rights era. So I'm quite diverse. The common thread to it all is United States history. I avoid dealing with the history of other countries when possible."
