SIDELIGHTS:
Peter A. Ubel is a doctor and professor who works primarily with patients who have multiple chronic illnesses, and also has training in bioethics. His book Pricing Life: Why It's Time for Health Care Rationing addresses the structure of the American health care system and ways in which health care dollars are assigned to patients based on severity of illness, ability to improve quality of life, and ways in which medical treatments can be made cost-effective. Robert M. Veatch, in a review for Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, concluded: "Ubel's case for rationing of health care is overwhelming and beautifully presented." Soren Holm, in a review for the Journal of Medical Ethics, found Ubel's effort to be "an extremely timely and stimulating book."
