SIDELIGHTS:

Trudi Strain Trueit told CA: "Writing fiction and nonfiction for children allows me to explore both reality and fantasy to their fullest. As a former television news reporter and weather anchor, it is gratifying to write books about weather, science, nature, history, and health that children will reach for in their quest to learn more about how the world works. Writing fiction, such as the "Julep O'Toole" series, allows me to craft stories that touch on the delicate issues that children face growing up, yet do it with humor and lightheartedness. I wrote the "Julep O'Toole" series because, like Julep, I was once an awkward middle child struggling to navigate the stormy seas of preteen life without a compass. This series is my way of reminding young girls that they are more distinct, powerful, and valuable than they may realize or be treated. It is my way of saying 'the world needs you.'"
