STOFFEL, Albert Law 1909-2002
OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born May 20, 1909, in Racine, WI; died May 6, 2002, in Santa Monica, CA. Journalist, cartoonist, editor, and author. Stoffel will be best remembered as the cartoonist of the "Bugs Bunny" strip that was syndicated nationally from 1946 until the 1970s. After earning his B.A. at the University of Kentucky in 1931, Stoffel was a reporter for the Wisconsin News during the early 1930s. From 1938 to 1939, he was a news and features writer in Italy before World War II started, and from 1940 to 1942 he was on staff at the Richmond News-Leader. During the war, Stoffel was an aircraft carrier communications officer. When he returned to civilian life, he joined Western Publishing in Los Angeles as an editor and manager. It was here that he began to produce the "Bugs Bunny" comic strip, which lasted until his retirement in 1975. He also wrote books for children, including How to Care for Your Dog.
