STILES, Ned B(erry) 1932-2003
OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born August 7, 1932, in Mays Lick, KY; died after a stroke January 29, 2003, in Greenwich, CT. Lawyer and author. Stiles was an attorney with the New York City law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen, and Hamilton (and predecessor firms) for most of his career; he was the managing partner from 1988 to 2000. By the time he retired, the firm under his direction had expanded internationally, with offices in Europe, Russia, and Asia. Stiles was also active in the urban business community as a member of the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Association and the New York City Economic Development Corporation; his local affiliations were with the Village of Quogue, New York, and the Group for the South Fork in Southampton. Stiles was the coauthor of the book The Silent Partners: Institutional Investors and Corporate Control.
