SIDELIGHTS: Belgian poet Edmond Schietekat, who wrote under the pen name Paul Snoek, was known for the experimental work evident in his first published collections, Archipel and Noodbrug. His later poems reflected a cynical surrealism and a baroque yet modern way of painting his poetic pictures.
Kendall Dunkelberg noted in Dutch Poetry in Modern Times that "most critics view the prophetic voice which Snoek adopted in Hercules, Richelieu, and Nostradamus as a drastic departure from the experimental poetry of his early period, a departure prepared by the complete demolition of his earlier poetry in De heilige gedichten, 1956–1958." Dunkelberg wrote that in these three volumes of poetry "we have seen a pattern develop, one of birth, purification, possession by a spirit or idea, eventually death." The three volumes were published in one volume in English translation as Hercules; Richelieu; and Nostradamus in 2000.
