OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born August 29, 1928, in Austin, TX; died October 24, 2002, in Santa Fe, NM. Minister, college administrator, and author. Smith was a former president of Austin College. He earned a B.A. from the University of Texas in 1950, a bachelor's degree in divinity from Yale University in 1953, and a doctorate from Drew University in 1965. During the late 1950s and 1960s he was campus pastor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and served from 1968 to 1969 as chancellor for residential college development there. Before becoming president of Austin College, Smith was an associate professor of religion in higher education at Yale and was executive director of the Society for Values in Higher Education. While serving as Austin College president he worked hard to improve the campus and encouraged students to take foreign languages and study abroad. Smith was the author of Secularization and the University (1968).
