SIDELIGHTS: Emerson College professor Eric Schaefer conducts research in film history, exploitation film, popular culture, and postwar film and television. In his book "Bold! Daring! Shocking! True!": A Historyof Exploitation Films, 1919-1959 he explores the history of exploitation films: films whose subjects most of society judges to be of poor taste, such as nudity, drug addiction, teenage sex, sexually transmitted diseases, prostitution, and other such topics. These films were cheaply made using unknown actors, were privately distributed, and were screened in small theatres and as sideshows. To avoid censorship, exploitation films were often disguised as educational; the genre eventually faded into obscurity as the government, studios, and individuals loosened their moral standards and allowed such topics into mainstream movies. WeeklyWire.com contributor Jeff Yanc noted that "Schaefer has concocted what will surely become the definitive study of the outlaw exploitation film industry in his new book." Los Angeles Times contributor Richard Schickel concluded, "This is an important book, not merely as a study in a forgotten realm of film history but as well-grounded social history, too."
