Sanoff, Alvin P. 1941-2007

Sanoff enjoyed a long career in various aspects of education communications, especially as the managing editor of U.S. News & World Report's annuals America's Best Colleges and America's Best Graduate Schools. He graduated from Harvard College in 1963, and the next year earned a master's in journalism from Columbia. After graduating, he worked a series of short-term jobs, including as a Washington Star reporter, night news editor for Newhouse Newspapers, and public information officer for the Small Business Administration. In 1967, he landed a job with the Baltimore Sun as a reporter and editorial writer. From 1971 to 1977, he was editorial page editor for the Dayton Journal Herald. In 1974, he won an Associated Press Award for best editorial writing. Sanoff then joined U.S. News & World Report, where, from 1992 to 1998, he managed the college annuals that rated America's higher institutions and also penned feature articles about education, social trends, and the media. After leaving the newspaper in 1998, Sanoff continued work in the area of education as senior vice president of communications for the education consulting firm Maguire Associates. From 2000 to 2004, he was director of the Schools of Education Research Project at Columbia University's Teachers College.
