ROBERTSON, (Charles) Martin 1911-2004

Robertson was an Oxford professor and highly respected scholar of ancient Greek antiquities. He completed his B.A. at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1934, after which he worked as an assistant keeper in the department of Greek and Roman antiquities at the British Museum. After service in the military during World War II, he earned his master's degree in 1947 from Trinity and returned to the British Museum for a time. In 1948 he joined the faculty at University College, London, as Yates Professor of Classical Art and Archaeology. Next, he was made Lincoln Chair of Classical Archaeology and Art at Oxford in 1961, retiring in 1978. Robertson also was chair of the managing committee of the British School at Athens from 1959 until 1968. A specialist in Greek art, such as painting, mosaics, sculpture, and jewelry, he was the author of the two-volume A History of Greek Art (1975), which is considered one of the best works ever published on the subject, as well as such titles as Greek Painting (1959) and The Art of Vase-Painting in Classical Athens (1992). A fellow of the British Academy and honorary member of the American Institute of Archaeology, Robertson was made an honorary fellow of University College and Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1980, and of Trinity College in 1987. He also received the Kenyon Medal from the British Academy in 1987.
