SIDELIGHTS: Canadian watercolor artist and teacher Jack Reid has taught more than 25,000 students over the course of his career, and his paintings—primarily rural landscapes—appear in numerous collections, including the Diamond Jubilee Collection at Windsor Castle in England, at the Savoy Hotel in London, and at the Waterton Glacier International Peace Park in Montana, where he served as artist-in-residence in 1997. Much of his work is also available as signed limited-edition prints. Reid has shared his painting techniques in the instructional videos titled Watercolor My Way, a series designed to distill the watercolor process down the simplest steps, as well as through a series of bestselling how-to books.
Reid's first book, Watercolor Basics: Let's Get Started, is geared toward the beginning watercolor painter. Daniel Lombardo, in a review for Library Journal, noted that Reid "neither assumes too much nor condescends." Other volumes include Watercolor Basics: Painting Snow and Water and Watercolor for the Fun of It: Easy Landscapes. The latter focuses on techniques Reid himself uses most frequently in his own work, and it also includes examples by other watercolorists, such as Linda Kemp and Grant Fuller. Booklist contributor Whitney Scott remarked that "this fine title will likely see strong demand from both beginning and more advanced watercolorists."
