PERSONAL:

Native name, Tall Straight Poplar; born July 18, 1943, in Sandy Lake Reserve, Ontario, Canada; died September 26, 1978; son of Maggie Ray; married Helen Goodwin; children: Carl, Norman, Corinna Maggie.

CAREER:

Painter and printmaker; apprentice to artist Norval Morrisseau; Manitoulin Arts Foundation, teacher of summer workshops in the 1970s; Kitawin (newspaper), Sandy Lake, Ontario, Canada, publisher; also editor and writer. Worked as trapper, logger, and miner in Red Lake, in Canada. Exhibitions: Art work represented in solo and group shows, including exhibitions at Ethel Flavelle Gallery, Art Gallery of Toronto, Wallack Galleries, and touring shows in England and Germany; work represented in collections at Canadian Museum of Civilization, Canadian Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, Royal Ontario Museum, Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay Art Gallery, and elsewhere.
