SIDELIGHTS:

George Perez has been creating comic book art since the 1970s and has been a penciler or inker for all the major publishers. Born in the South Bronx, the self-taught artist is probably best known for his work on The New Teen Titans, which was adapted for television and which DC Comics published as collections. Library Journal's Steve Raiteri reviewed one of these, The New Teen Titans: The Terror of Trigon, which reprints the first five issues of the second series from 1984 to 1985. Raiteri noted that the popular series, like Marvel's X-Men, featured strong female heroes. Raiteri wrote that "Perez's work from this period set a new standard for superhero comics with its meticulous attention to realistic detail."

Marvel and DC comics had planned a collaboration of their New Justice League of America (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman) and Avengers (Captain America, Iron Man, Thor) superheroes in the 1980s, both of which Perez had contributed to, but the project never reached fruition. In 2003, that dream became a reality with JLA/Avengers. Entertainment Weekly's Tom Russo wrote that "Perez supplies the art, and his fantastically detailed old-school line work has only grown finer over time."

Most recently, Perez became senior artist for Cross-Gen where he works on the CrossGen Chronicles alongside a new generation of young artists.
