A Roman Catholic priest, Munson was a retired professor and chair of the philosophy department at De Paul University. An alumnus of Loyola University, he earned an A.B. there in 1946, followed by an A.M. in 1948, a Ph.L. in 1948, and an S.T.L. in 1955. He then continued studies in France, receiving a Ph.D. from the University of Louvain in 1957. A brief period as assistant professor at West Baden College in Indiana was followed by teaching at Loyola from 1961 to 1965. Munson then joined the De Paul University faculty as an associate professor, and he was named a professor of philosophy in 1969. He chaired his department from 1985 to 1989, when he retired. Afterwards, he moved to Colorado, where he was active as a prison chaplain and substitute parish priest. He retired to Tucson, Arizona, but after three years there returned to the Chicago area. He had been suffering from Parkinson's and injuries from a fall that never fully healed. Munson was the author of several books on theology and philosophy, including The Essential Wisdom of George Santayana (1962), Religious Consciousness and Experience (1975), and The Challenge of Religion: A Philosophical Appraisal (1985).
