MUHEIM, Harry Miles 1920-2003
OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born February 17, 1920, in San Francisco, CA; died February 11, 2003, in Boulder County, CO. Educator and author. Muheim was a freelance writer best known for his television documentaries and political campaign commercials. Educated at Stanford University, he received his M.A. there in 1949. During World War II he was a naval intelligence officer and Japanese translator, and was decorated with the Bronze Star. After completing his master's degree, he taught speech and drama as an associate professor at New York University during the 1950s, while at the same time working as a writer. He penned scripts for educational, industrial, and documentary films, and beginning in the 1960s wrote speeches and promotional material for politicians including Robert F. Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, Jimmy Carter, and Jerry Brown. His documentaries for television won awards, including the 1991 Peabody for a film about Pearl Harbor and the 2001 Writers' Guild Annual Award for his Kennedy Center Honors program. Muheim was also the author of one novel, Vote for Quimby—and Quick! (1978).
