MESSINGER, Sheldon L(eopold) 1925-2003
OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born August 26, 1925, in Chicago, IL; died of cancer March 6, 2003, in Berkeley, CA. Educator and author. Messinger was an expert in criminology who was a longtime faculty member of the University of California at Berkeley. A World War II veteran who was in the U.S. Army infantry, he completed a Ph.B. at the University of Chicago in 1947, followed by an A.B. in 1951, an M.A. in 1953, and a Ph.D. in 1969, all at the University of California at Los Angeles. He began his academic career as an instructor at Princeton in 1956, followed by a year at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, California. He then moved to the University of California at Berkeley, where he was vice chair of the Center for the Study of Law and Society during the 1960s, becoming a full professor in 1970. He was named Elizabeth J. Boalt Professor of Law in 1988, became a professor of law emeritus in 1991, and was professor of the graduate school from 1995 to 1997. Messinger was the coauthor of several books, including Civil Justice and the Poor (1967), and was coeditor of The State of the University: Authority and Change (1970).
