SIDELIGHTS: Virginia E. McCormick told CA: "I retired early to research and write about nineteenth-century Ohio history—primarily to give a voice to ordinary people and their extraordinary accomplishments. One of these was A. B. Graham, a remarkable man my husband and I knew when he was in his nineties, a man who rose from poverty to became a township school superintendent who organized an agricultural club that evolved into the national 4-H Club program.

"My second book utilized the detailed daily diaries of my great-grandmother—a farm wife whose 'butter and egg' business contributed more than twenty-five percent of the household income even though she was considered a non-working 'housewife.'

"Worthington Landmarks: Photo-Essays of Historic Worthington Properties and New Englanders on the Ohio Frontier: Migration and Settlement of Worthington, Ohio, both written with my husband, grew out of our research leading up to our community's bicentennial. Educational Architecture in Ohio: From One-Room Schools and Carnegie Libraries to Community Education Villages is the outgrowth of a research project I completed for the Ohio Historic Preservation Office.

"Aspiring writers are frequently advised to write about what they know. That seems especially true for me, with each research question leading me to a new interest and new project."
