McCarty, Clifford 1929–2005

OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born June 13, 1929, in Los Angeles, CA; died of emphysema, August 13, 2005, in Topanga, CA. Book seller and author. McCarty was a former bookstore owner who became well known for his books about film music and movie stars. A 1952 graduate of California State College, he worked as a salesman and taxi driver before establishing the Boulevard Bookshop in Los Angeles in 1958. The business remained successful for many years before closing in 1980. A cofounder of the Society for the Preservation of Film Music, which was later renamed the Film Music Society, he was the editor of the organization's journal, Cue Sheet, from 1984 to 1987. McCarty was the author or coauthor of several books, including Film Composers in America: A Checklist of Their Work (1953; second edition, 2000), Bogey: The Films of Humphrey Bogart (1965), The Films of Errol Flynn (1969), and the edited Film Music 1 (1989).
