MANELLA, Raymond L(awrence) 1917-2004

OBITUARY NOTICE— See index for CA sketch: Born June 19, 1917; died of cancer November 27, 2004, in Reston, VA. Sociologist, social worker, educator, and author. Manella was a former manager at the Department of Health and Human Services who was an expert on juvenile crime and delinquency. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1938 and earned his master's degree in social work from Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) in 1939. After working as a probation and parole officer in Pittsburgh, he was director of juvenile state institutions in Maryland during the 1950s. In 1959 he joined the Department of Health and Human Services as a social worker who specialized in helping runaway youths; during this time he was also an associate professor of sociology at Loyola College and a consultant to the federal government. He retired from social work in 1987. Manella was the author of Post-Institutional Services for Delinquent Youth (1967) and The Hard-Core Juvenile Offender (1977), as well as the editor of several other books about juvenile delinquency.
