The fiction of prolific romance novelist Susan Mallery is known for its riotous romps. "No one packs more emotional punch and humor into a story than Mallery," attested Jill M. Smith in a Romantic Times Online review of Sizzling. "The ability to move a reader from laughter to tears is a special talent and this author has it in spades." Pamela Cohen, also writing for the Romantic Times, praised the "multifaceted characters, romantic tension and strong emotions" found in A Little Bit Pregnant. Even when her stories have a "slight plot," as a Publishers Weekly contributor remarked in a review of Sweet Success, Mallery manages to bolster it with "witty dialogue, plenty of romantic tension and delicious characters."

The recipient of a National Readers' Choice Award, Mallery has penned both contemporary tales and historical novels. Her works have appeared on the USA Today and Waldenbooks best seller lists. In addition to her sense of humor, critics have repeatedly noted the author's solid skills in characterization. For example, Smith, reviewing Irresistible, commented that the author "does her usual excellent job of taking characters with issues and making them riveting," while Booklist contributor Shelley Mosley commented that the "Buchanan" series "has a wonderful cast of characters."
