SIDELIGHTS: Former independent film producer David Mack is best known for the many stories, screenplays, graphic novels, and other works he has contributed to the "Star Trek" universe. One of his most well-known pieces is Star Trek: The Starfleet Survival Guide, a take-off on the popular Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook series by Joshua Piven and David Borgenicht. Star Trek: The Starfleet Survival Guide opens with the section "Standard Issue Equipment—Nonstandard Uses," which explains how to purify drinking water with a phaser and how to generate a rudimentary force field with a subspace transceiver, among other things. Other sections include "Unconventional Medicine," which contains instructions on how to treat temporal narcosis, a medical condition caused by exposure to temporal abnormalities; "Dangerous Life-Forms," featuring the entry "Avoiding Mind Control by Elasian Women"; and "Extreme Scenarios." The book is a "fun parody of the survival guide genre," wrote a StarTrek.com reviewer, as well as "a nice trip down Star Trek Memory Lane."

Mack is also the author, along with frequent co-author John J. Ordover, of the four-volume graphic novel Star Trek: Divided We Fall. The work provides some of the back story of the Trills, including explaining why most Trills have been attached to symbionts. Mack and Ordover draw characters from both the Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine television series to create what Little Review critic Michelle Erica Green termed "a crossover in the best sense—not just the crews from two series working together, but strong parallels between their lives and unique opportunities for cooperation."
