SIDELIGHTS:
Gary Lovisi is recognized for his contributions to the science fiction and detective genres as well as the furthering of a new genre that combines elements of both science fiction and detective fiction. Of Hellbent on Homicide, Marvin Lachman, writing for Armchair Detective, observed that "Lieutenant Bill Griffin and Sgt. Herman ‘Fats’ Stubbs are a pair of tough honest detectives, with Griffin the jarringly ungrammatical narrator." Booklist contributor Wes Lukowsky wrote that "this short novel is first-rate hard-boiled fiction." He called the book "unusual and very satisfying reading." Regarding Blood in Brooklyn, Lukowsky observed that "Lovisi's world is unremittingly dark; love exists ephemerally if at all, and revenge is the dominant theme. Fans of Andrew Vachss will clutch Vic Powers to their black little hearts and regale in the vigilante street justice that is so satisfying in print and so frightening in the real world."
Lovisi's compilation, Science Fiction Detective Tales, attracted notice for highlighting the congruencies between the two different genres. Lachman noted that in the anthology, Lovisi "blends his knowledge of the two popular genres and shows how they make quite comfortable bedfellows," and concluded that "I have seen articles about science-fiction mysteries, even attended Bouchercon panels on the subject, but this is the first book I have come across which combines the fields, and it is a welcome addition to critical writing."
