Lipstein, Kurt 1909-2006

OBITUARY NOTICE— See index for CA sketch: Born March 19, 1909, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany; died December 2, 2006. Educator and author. Lipstein was a former Cambridge University professor of comparative law and a noted expert on private international law. A 1931 graduate of the University of Berlin, he was a member of the Prussian Judicial Service for two years before enrolling at Cambridge University. Here he completed a Ph.D. in 1936 and was later a faculty secretary there. He was hired as a lecturer at Cambridge in 1946 and was a director of research for the International Association for Legal Science from 1954 to 1959. Lipstein was made a fellow of Clare College in 1956 and a reader in conflict of laws at Cambridge in 1962. From 1973 to 1976 he served as professor of comparative law. Earning the Humboldt Prize in 1980, he also held honorary degrees from Cambridge and the University of Würzburg. Lipstein was the author of such works as The Law of the European Economic Community (1974) and Principles of the Conflict of Laws: National and International (1981).
