SIDELIGHTS: Professor of history David W. Levy has made significant contributions to American intellectual and constitutional history with works on topics ranging from the letters of Supreme Court justice Louis D. Brandeis and the fireside chats of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, to the political debate over Vietnam, and the history of the University of Oklahoma. Levy's volumes on the letters of progressive reformer and U.S. Supreme Court justice Louis D. Brandeis have encompassed Brandeis's professional correspondence as well as his personal family letters. Library Journal contributor Milton Cantor wrote of "Half Brother, Half Son": The Letters of Louis D. Brandeis to Felix Frankfurter, "To read them is to be lost in a newsreel archive with American makers and shakers."
With Russell D. Buhite, Levy coedited FDR's Fireside Chats, which represents the first collection of Roosevelt's spoken words, instead of the final written drafts of the thirty-one fireside chats. Levy and Buhite added brief contextual essays to introduce each radio program. In The Debate over Vietnam, Levy examines the fierce debates which consumed the nation over the propriety, necessity, and morality of the Vietnam War.
