See index for CA sketch: Born February 24, 1918, in London, England; died September 30, 2003. Mathematician, educator, and author. Kneebone, a former University of London professor, was the coauthor of the "Semple and Kneebone" books that are now considered classics in the field. Educated at the University of London, he earned three degrees there, including a Ph.D. in 1943. After teaching at Westfield College at the University of London for three years, he joined the Bedford College faculty, which is also at the University of London. At Bedford, he was a lecturer in mathematics from 1947 to 1964, a reader in the foundation of mathematics from 1964 to 1975, and a reader in mathematics from 1976 until his retirement in 1983. Kneebone is best known for the two books he wrote with J. G. Semple: Algebraic Projective Geometry (1952) and Algebraic Curves (1959). After his interests shifted from geometry to logic, he also wrote Mathematical Logic and the Foundations of Mathematics (1963) and, with B. Rotman, The Theory of Sets and Transfinite Numbers (1966).
