SIDELIGHTS: Michael Keevak told CA: "I can best describe my professional career as a slow and constant realization that the world is a much bigger place than one had imagined. It is my goal, as both an educator and a critic, to reinforce the idea of our own necessary provinciality, and the idea that one must be alert to the ways in which one's own thinking both ignores and excludes cultures and histories that are different from one's own. By studying other cultures or other historical periods, we learn to become more discontented with ourselves.

"I am interested not in facts as such, but in their interpretation. A future project will involve the Great Wall of Europe."
