SIDELIGHTS: Robert B. Kaplan is "reasonably proficient" in Russian and French, though he does linguistic work in a number of languages. He once told CA, "The titles of my writings are technical, largely concerned with language, but in all of them there is a basic concern to improve the human condition through a better understanding of how and why human beings use written language."

In 1999 Kaplan and coeditor Richard B. Baldauf inaugurated a new series, "Current Issues in Language Planning." Titles in the series include Language Planning in Nepal, Taiwan and Sweden and Language Planning in Malawi, Mozambique and the Philippines. Mohamed Maamouri in the Comparative Education Review stated that the series "is an important and most welcome addition to the international language policy and planning literature." In his Comparative Education Review piece on Language Planning in Nepal, Taiwan and Sweden, Maamouri contended that the work "is strongly recommended for the amount of information it provides to scholars interested in international comparative education." The critic added, "I believe that the studies presented here, and similar ones in the other series volumes, will significantly contribute, in the long run, to developing useful language policy and planning theoretical guidelines."
