SIDELIGHTS:
In the Encyclopedia of Latin American Politics, Diana Kapiszewski presents chapters by various scholars on the eighteen Spanish-speaking republics of Latin America, as well as Puerto Rico, Brazil (where the language is Portuguese), and Haiti (where the language is French). The authors write within a standardized format that provides a wide range of information on each country with a primary focus on the structure of the government. Also included is a list of the government leaders, a bibliography, and Web resources. Each country description comes with a chart that lists important information concerning economic, political, and social data. Noting that the "entries are concise, [and] well written," a Booklist contributor added that "this volume's country-by-country focus on twentieth-century politics makes it unique." Sylvia D. Hall-Ellis commented in the Library Journal: "Easy to use, … this important volume offers clear explanations of events, individuals, and dynamics."
