SIDELIGHTS:

Robert L. Kane is a physician and public health professional who is an expert in geriatrics and long-term care. He is the author, with Joseph G. Ouslander and Itamar B. Abrass, of Essentials of Clinical Geriatrics, a guide for practical hands-on care of the geriatric population as provided by a wide range of health-care practitioners, including primary-care physicians. In a review of the book's third edition, Martin S. Lipsky wrote in the Journal of Family Practice: "It is my opinion that the authors have hit their mark." The book focuses on how health care should change as patients become elderly, the most widespread geriatric health care problems, and general strategies for managing elderly patients. Charles A. Cefalu, writing in the American Family Physician, called the book "a quick clinical reference guide to geriatrics for primary care and consultant physicians in the day-to-day care of the geriatric patient at all levels of care." Cefalu also noted that Essentials of Clinical Geriatrics "offers a highly comprehensive, yet condensed overview of general clinical geriatrics."

In Long-Term Care: Principles, Programs, and Policies, Kane and coauthor Rosalie A. Kane examine the long-term care system in the United States with a focus on public policy in terms of financing. They also analyze various communities and their history to reveal how these communities influence financing. Hastings Center Report contributor Laurence B. McCullough noted: "The thirty-page list of references is not only a valuable guide to the literature but testimony to the prodigious scholarly effort that this book represents."

The reviewer added that the book is "a valuable starting point for the future development of an ethics of aging that will cast a more jaundiced eye on American preoccupations and open itself to the questions and criticisms of our colleagues in other countries."

In Improving the Health of Older People: A World View, editors Kane, J. Grimley Evans, and David Macfadyen provide papers and essays that examine the growing knowledge about the aging process and advancing social policies concerning the elderly population. "The editors have succeeded in producing a book which, despite its global dimension, is immediately relevant to those working within their own national and local context," wrote K.J. Fullerton in the Lancet. "I strongly recommend it."

Kane and his sister, Joan C. West, are the authors of It Shouldn't Be This Way: The Failure of Long-Term Care. The book examines the U.S. long-term healthcare system through an analysis of their mother's treatment and care within the system. A SciTech Books contributor noted that the authors found their mother's "experience to be profoundly negative." As a result, Kane and West describe what they see as the system's failure and propose ways for improving it.

In Meeting the Challenge of Chronic Illness, Kane and coauthors Reinhard Priester and Annette M. Totten write about reforming the U.S. health-care system to better serve the needs of those suffering from chronic illnesses. In addition to recommending policy reforms, the authors also discuss the role of physicians and the media in helping reform to come about. Kane is also editor of Understanding Health Care Outcomes Research, which includes thirteen chapters by various health-care outcomes researchers. Topics include key concepts of research design, obstacles to this type of research, and ethical issues.
