SIDELIGHTS:

Richard L. Jackson has contributed to a body of scholarly work on Afro-Latin American authors and their thematic concerns. From early studies on depiction of black characters in white Latin American literature, Jackson moved to considerations of African-descended Latin-American novelists and poets, with emphasis on their sense of humanism and cultural authenticity. In Hispania, Clementine C. Rabassa noted that Jackson's work "may be regarded as a comprehensive reflection of the trajectory and scope that defines the relatively new area of literary criticism dealing with prose fiction and poetry by or about Spanish-speaking black writers."

In a Choice review of Black Writers and Latin America: Cross-Cultural Affinities, M. S. Arrington, Jr. concluded that Jackson's book "lays the groundwork for much future research on this expansive topic." Richard K. Barksdale in World Literature Today commented that Jackson's "historical and critical assessment of Latin America's major black writers is an excellent contribution to the field of Afro-Hispanic Studies."
