HYINK, Bernard L(ynn) 1913-2004

Hyink was a former political science professor at California State University at Fullerton and former president of CSU's Sacramento campus. Graduating from the University of Redlands in 1935 with a B.A., he finished his M.A. at the University of California at Berkeley in 1936 and his Ph.D. at the University of Southern California in 1943. Hyink spent much of his career in academia, starting as an assistant to the president of the University of Redlands in the late 1930s, and teaching political science there through much of the 1940s. Occasionally, he would leave university work behind to work in government. In 1942 he was assistant civil service examiner for the U.S. Civil Service Commission in Washington, D.C., and in 1949 he returned to the capital as an education counselor for the National Institute for Public Affairs. Hyink also spent a year at the University of Tehran as a visiting professor in 1956. The remainder of his career was spent on California campuses. The 1950s were devoted to the University of Southern California, where he served as dean of students for several years, as well as being professor of political science from 1957 to 1960. When Hyink joined the faculty at California State University, Fullerton, it was still known as Orange County State College. He worked as a professor and vice president of academic affairs there through the 1960s, moving on to California State University at Sacramento in 1970 to be that university's president for two years. Hyink returned to Fullerton in 1972, remaining there as a professor until his 1983 retirement. Hyink was the coauthor of several popular political science textbooks, the most successful of which was Politics and Government in California, which was first published in 1959 and has since gone through fifteen editions. He also cowrote Government in the Golden State (1967) and Issues in California Politics and Government (1977).
