OBITUARY NOTICE— See index for CA sketch: Born August 19, 1912, in London, England; died December 11, 2006. Attorney and author. A former chief master of the British Supreme Court, Heward was also noted for writing biographies and books on the law. After suffering measles as a teenager, his hearing was severely impaired. Nevertheless, he graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, with a master’s in 1933. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery during World War II, serving as an antiaircraft gunner in England and then in India, where he rose to the rank of major. After the war, he was a partner in the law firm of Rose, Johnson & Hicks. In 1959 he earned his Supreme Court post as master of the Chancery Division. He was chief master from 1980 until 1985, when he retired. Heward was the admired author of the law book Guide to Chancery Practice (1962; 5th edition, 1979), but also wrote several respected biographies on English justices. Among these are The Great and the Good: A Life of Lord Radcliffe (1994) and A Victorian Law Reformer: A Life of Lord Sel-borne (1998).
