See index for CA sketch: Born January 10, 1915, in Trenton, NJ; died January 31, 2004, in Old Chatham, NY. Author. Herrick was best known for his espionage and war novels. A veteran of the Spanish Civil War, during which he fought against Francisco Franco's army as part of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, Herrick fictionalized this experience in his novel Hermanos! (1969). Before becoming a novelist, however, he worked as a court reporter from 1943 to 1969. By late 1960s, his fiction was seeing print, beginning with The Itinerant (1967), which was followed by nine more novels and the memoir, Jumping the Line: The Adventures and Misadventures of an American Radical (1998). Among his other novels, his most ambitious were the three comprising an espionage trilogy: Shadows and Wolves (1980), Love and Terror (1981), and Kill Memory (1984). His last novel was Bradovich (1990).
