For me, every city is exciting and interesting, and beauty can be found on the boulevards of Paris and in the gritty once-industrial sections of Philadelphia and Glasgow. I write as a way to make sense of the parts of the past that interest me. One of my mentors once accused me of being interested in the age of the steam railway, and broadly speaking he was right. My interests pick up in the 1830s and fall in the 1950s."
