HEDRICK, Floyd D(udley) 1927-2003

Hedrick specialized in purchasing management and was a former purchaser for the Library of Congress. A graduate of Virginia Commercial College, where he received a B.S. in 1948, he eventually earned a doctorate in business administration from the University of California at Davis. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, his first job as a purchasing manager was with Trailways, Inc., where he worked from 1948 to 1966, and he was also employed by the J. B. Kendall Steel Co. These early years were interrupted by the Korean War, when Hedrick was recalled to active duty; he remained in the Naval Reserve until 1972, retiring as a commander. Hedrick became vice president of the food service company Macke Co. in 1966, as well as being vice president, and then president, of Atlantic Supply Co., a Macke subsidiary. In 1973 he was hired by the Library of Congress to be its chief of procurement and contracting, and retired in 1993. Hedrick wrote several books focusing on the field of business purchasing, including Purchasing Management in the Smaller Company (1971) and Purchasing for Owners of Small Plants (1976). He was also editor of the American Management Association's Management Handbook, and was elected to that organization's Wall of Fame in 1982.
