SIDELIGHTS: Richard Griswold del Castillo once told CA: "I am interested in the history of the American Southwest in relation to its indigenous peoples. I have traveled throughout Arizona and New Mexico with brief excursions into Mexico. I am also committed to quantitative history in conjunction with traditional sources.
"Being a native of Southern California and Los Angeles I feel that the Mexican-American's history is especially important. The Los Angeles Barrio, 1850–1890: A Social History was an attempt to tell a neglected story of the fate of the thousands of working-class Mexicanos who had to confront a changed political and economic reality. My research in family history is an attempt to expand upon this subject by studying the changing family in four Southwestern towns: Tucson, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, and San Antonio. My work is part of a body of history being written by younger scholars who graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles in the 1970s."
