SIDELIGHTS: Peter Goullart fled with his mother from the Russian Revolution into China in 1919. There he learned Chinese, lived and studied among Chinese people and in Taoist monasteries, and worked as a cooperative expert in China and Tibet until the Chinese Communist takeover in 1949. Afterward he continued to travel, work, and live at intervals in Southeast Asia. Goullart's languages include English, French, Russian, Chinese, and Italian.
