SIDELIGHTS:

An associate professor of horticultural science at the University of Minnesota, Jeff Gillman was inspired to prove or disprove many common home garden remedies, a number of which have been routinely used for hundreds of years. The Truth about Garden Remedies: What Works, What Doesn't, and Why presents a number of traditional garden remedies, including the mindset behind each one's use, a description of Gillman's applicable experiments, and the results determining if each concoction is ultimately helpful or harmful. Gillman also provides an assessment of each remedy, recommending whether it should be used or not.

In a review for Monsters and Critics Books, Angela Youngman described The Truth about Garden Remedies as "a good read, full of unusual information making it an ideal present for a keen gardener." Rainy Side Gardeners contributor Debra Teachout-Teashon commented: "Gillman delivers the facts on remedies in this invaluable, research-based book." In an article posted on HGTV.com, the Home & Garden Television Web site, Marie Hofer wrote: "Gillman takes the uncertainty out of the remedies and explains the science behind their success (or lack of it)." Madeline Wajda, a contributor to Master Gardeners, regarded The Truth about Garden Remedies to be "useful and enlightening" and "a valuable book for any even slightly serious gardener to own."
