SIDELIGHTS:
With Shadow of the Sentinel: One Man's Quest to Find the Hidden Treasure of the Confederacy, Warren Getler combines his interests in investigative journalism and treasure-hunting in exotic locations. Working with coauthor Bob Brewer, Getler, in Shadow of the Sentinel, weaves a tale of vast hordes of Confederate gold, hidden by a secret society deeply influenced by Freemasonry, and guarded for use in a future Southern rebellion. Shadow of the Sentinel is Brewer's story of his own possible connection to the shadowy Knights of the Golden Circle, who are said to have hidden gold and gems in caches throughout the United States and even into Canada. It is Getler's role as the journalist to help Brewer convey his personal tale and its historical back story so that interested readers can assess the plausibility of the information.
Some reviewers of Shadow of the Sentinel expressed disappointment that Getler and Brewer did not literally uncover any of the hidden wealth that they feel they have found. A Publishers Weekly critic, for instance, called the book "a curiosity that will strain many readers' credibility, but leave a lingering ‘Maybe.’" Duncan Spencer in the Washington Times also found some of Brewer's decisions "infuriating," but nonetheless concluded: "Mr. Getler is a skilled hand at storytelling. He spins a tale here of deep mystery and occult practices and Southern mysticism, slowly pulling back the curtain on a strange world."
