SIDELIGHTS:

Historian William C. Fuller, Jr., is the author of several studies of imperial Russia. His 2006 book The Foe Within: Fantasies of Treason and the End of Imperial Russia examines the Russian military and political bureaucracy in light of the spy mania that led to hundreds of arrests and executions and ultimately to the 1917 revolution. Foreign Affairs critic Robert Legvold remarked that Fuller "tells a good story, with skill and verve." Reviewing the book in the New York Times, Firuz Kazemzadeh deemed it a "richly documented" work that has "contributed to our understanding of Russia's past and thereby helped equip us for a better understanding of the Soviet Union today."
