Minister, missionary, and teacher. Hillside Church Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, assistant minister and leader of St. James Mission, 1960-61; Madras Christian College, Tambaram, India, began as lecturer, became professor of politics, 1962-70; University of Sussex, Brighton, England, chaplain, and lecturer in politics and religious studies at school of African and Asian studies, 1970-78; University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, professor of Christian ethics and practical theology, 1978-2000, professor of theology and public issues, beginning 2000, director of center for theology and public issues, 1984-2000, principal of New College, 1986-96, dean of faculty of divinity, 1996-2000. Licensed by Presbytery of St. Andrews, 1960; ordained presbyter of Church of South India, 1962. Edinburgh Council of Social Services, chair, 1983-86.
