SIDELIGHTS: Charles H. Fleischer is an attorney who practices employment law and specializes in human resources issues and employer's rights. He was a participant in the first U.S. Supreme Court case involving sexual harassment. Fleischer works with businesses and associations on employment-law issues, and is the author of three books on these topics. The first, Employer's Rights: Your Legal Handbook from Hiring to Termination and Everything in Between, covers a wide variety of business and employment law concepts from the employer's perspective. Fleischer discusses employee discipline and termination procedures, state and federal tax issues, wage attachments and garnishments, employee evaluations and personnel files, worker's compensation law, and more. His advice is geared toward helping businesses smoothly conduct their day-to-day affairs and reduce the risk of lawsuits from employees.
In The Complete Hiring and Firing Handbook: Every Manager's Guide to Working with Employees Legally Fleischer discusses the numerous legal, ethical, and emotional aspects of both the hiring and firing process. In addition to easing the sometimes-lengthy process of hiring, Fleischer also offers ways to reduce the volatility of an employee termination. A reviewer in HRMagazine called it a "valuable book" that shows how to turn the difficult decisions of hiring and firing into positive outcomes.
HR for Small Business: From Hiring and Firing and Everything in Between also focuses on hiring and termination procedures, with the intent of keeping businesses and managers out of legal jeopardy because of their decisions. Fleischer covers contracts, benefits, employee discipline, federal requirements, and other critical subjects. He also explains the various acronyms commonly encountered in employment settings, and case studies of important legal rulings, definitions of terms, and summary tips. Fleischer's book is "one of the few geared to the bulk of American business," noted Barbara Jacobs in Booklist.
