SIDELIGHTS: Economic expert and former commodities trader Ted C. Fishman is the author of China, Inc.: How the Rise of the Next Superpower Challenges America and the World. In this title Fishman charts the amazing economic growth China achieved following the 1970s, discusses how it was accomplished, and speculates on the effects it might have on the U.S. economy's manufacturing and retailing sectors. The book is full of detailed data, and "some of his statistics carry a jolt," noted a Publishers Weekly reviewer. For example, although overall there was sixteen-percent price inflation in the United States between 1998 and the publication of the book, for the goods that were largely imported from China prices actually fell. Fishman also emphasizes the human potential in China, where there are more people migrating from rural areas to take city jobs than there are workers in the entire United States.
Chinese labor is cheap by global standards, but it is not the cheapest. What makes the Chinese so attractive as factory workers, Fishman argues, is that they are "docile" and controlled by the Chinese government. China, Inc. "offers a torrent of statistics, case studies and anecdotes to tell a by now familiar but still worrisome story succinctly," the Publishers Weekly reviewer explained. Fishman's presentation of his facts was praised by other critics, as well. A Kirkus Reviews critic declared the author's thesis "a thought-provoking and accessible forecast of strange times to come," while a New Zealand Management contributor termed China, Inc. "a fascinating primer on just what is happening in China," adding that it is "easy to read and well researched."
